January 10 - January 14
This week we will be focusing on Prudence. We want to invite your student to wear maize & blue on Mondays to celebrate the Positivity Project. To check this out at home, you can access the P2 for Families at https://posproject.org/p2-for-families/ The password is P2.
Nuts & Bolts
Testing This Week: NWEA Math on Tuesday (1/11), NWEA Reading on Wednesday (1/12), F/P Reading test this week as time allows and spelling test (on benchmark words, not words they've studied) on Thursday. All of these assesments were done at the beginning of the year. Doing them at this time allows me to check progress, see growth, make informed changes to any groups and help the students goal set for the remainder of the year. Because of testing this week, there will be no spelling words.
Conferences will take place at the end of the month. I will hold conferences for the students I feel I need to meet with. If I do not reach out to you for a conference, and you would like one, please email me to let me know.
We will swim January 18-24th in the afternoons at the high school. Please make sure your student has a suit and towel that will be cleaned each day.
- Please make sure to send your child with coats and cold weather gear for outside recess when needed.
- Kids should bring a full water bottle to school everyday as well as a healthy snack.
What to Work on at Home
To keep your student practicing the skills we are working hard on at school, please consider having them work on:
Reading- 20-30 minutes/day.
Spelling- None this week due to testing. Students will receive spelling words on Monday and take their test on Friday. Please make sure they study their words every night.
IXL Math Practice- Please have your child work on IXL P, M and F at home for 10 mins a day.
Class this Week
Math- We are going to be finishing Unit 3: Addition & Subtraction within 1,000 . In this unit, students use place value understanding to round whole numbers and add and subtract within 1,000. They also represent and solve two-step word problems using addition, subtraction, and multiplication and assess the reasonableness of answers.
Reading- This week we will focus on Unit 5: Inferencing and Making Connections. The students will practice inferencing and connecting during modeled mini-lessons and through our class read aloud. They will also have the opportunity to practice these skills with partners in small group and independently during read to self.
Writing- We will continue to write to persuade as we read about Zoos and decide is we are for or against them after conducting research and hearing many points of view. Your student will take their stance and use evidence to persuade their reader to share their beliefs about zoos!
Science We will continue working on Unit 2: Animals Through Time! In this unit, students develop an understanding of how animals and their environments change through time. Fossils provide a window into the animals and habitats of the past. Analyzing the traits of animals provides evidence for how those traits vary, how they are inherited, and how they have changed over time. Students also examine how the environment can affect inherited traits and determine which animals will survive in a particular environment.
