December 6 - December 10

This week we will be focusing on Knowing that our words and actions affect others. We want to invite your student to wear maize & blue on Mondays to celebrate the Positivity Project. To check this out at home, you can access the P2 for Families at https://posproject.org/p2-for-families/  The password is P2.

Nuts & Bolts

  • It’s that time of year again! The Student Council invites you to fill Santa’s sack to help those less fortunate by donating to Toys for Tots. Classrooms will be collecting donations Monday, December 6 through Friday, December 10. The two classes that bring in the most donations will receive a pizza party with Silver Beach Pizza courtesy of Chris Thompson at The Mitten Insurance Agency. Donations must be new, unwrapped toys and could be for a wide age range. All donations will stay local here in the Benton Harbor/Stevensville/Saint Joseph area. We appreciate all of the support in years past and look forward to another great Holiday season. Thank you for the help.

  • Just a reminder: the 3rd grade Musical of the Nutcracker is  December 16th at the John and Dede Howard Auditorium at St. Joseph High School at 7:30 pm. You may start arriving at the HIGH SHCOOL as early as 7:15 pm but not any earlier. They can then report to CHOIR ROOM  to wait until showtime. Families, please wait to be seated until the other performance has ended. All the elementary schools are performing on the same night but at different times.

  • For costume needs for The Nutcracker- Please visit this webpage

  • BOOK FAIR THIS WEEK! Kids may shop at their recesses!

  • In January, 3rd graders will learn about swim safety. Please make sure your student has a suit that will fit at that time :) Dates will be sent out closer to the start of the program.

  • Please make sure to send your child with coats and cold weather gear for outside recess if needed
  • Kids should bring a full water bottle to school everyday

What to Work on at Home

To keep your student practicing the skills we are working hard on at school, please consider having them work on:

Reading- 20-30 minutes/day.

Spelling- Students will receive spelling words on Monday and take their test on Friday. Please make sure they study their words every night.

IXL Math Practice- Please have your child work on IXL D 6-9 at home for 10 mins a day. If they are successful with standard E, let them try standard F!

Class this Week

Math- We are starting Unit 3: Addition & Subtraction within 1,000 . In this unit, students use place value understanding to round whole numbers and add and subtract within 1,000. They also represent and solve two-step word problems using addition, subtraction, and multiplication and assess the reasonableness of answers.

Reading- This week we will complete Unit 4. We will focus on story elements! When your child is reading, ask them about the following elements in the story: the characters and their traits, the setting, the big events that have been happening, any problems that characters are facing, ideas and inferences on how the characters might solve their problems!

Writing- We will starting on Unit 2: Personal Essays! The students will write to persuade their readers to agree with them on a topic they feel passionate about!

Social Studies- We will begin working on Unit 2: Michigan History! In this unit, students will use primary and secondary sources to explore the early settlements and history of Michigan.
